What we don't get downunder here. MZ1000

We truly are a long way away from the rest of the world downunder here. Europe, UK and the USA have these bikes. The Australian MZ distributor is trying to get these passed through ADR for compliance. How long will this take? Who knows??

Anyway at least we down here can look at photos of them.
All the photos and specs came from

1000 SF

SuperTraveller: MZ 1000 ST

"The SuperTraveller is based on the 1000cc MZ model range. Other 1000cc MZ bikes are the sportsbike 1000 S and the naked bike 1000 SF SuperFighter.

Frame and fairing of the SuperTraveller are to a large extent identical with the MZ 1000 S that is produced in the Zschopau factory since 2004. The 4-stroke, inline twin engine is identical with the MZ 1000 SF SuperFighter that has been launched recently. The engine is tuned for torque (98 Nm) and has a top performance of 83 kW (113hp) at 9000 rpm.

The features of the new SuperTraveller have been designed for comfortable journeys: A different handle bar and low foot rests ensure that the seating position is absolutely perfect for long distances. The screen is 30 mm higher compared to the MZ 1000 S to grant more wind protection with an upright seating position. A new rear seat cushion provides more comfort for the pillion rider. Optimised clutch springs reduce the hand-force to operate the clutch by 20%.

In addition, the manufacturer offers a luggage system that can carry the luggage of 2 people for long journeys. The basis of this luggage system are two 40 l side cases that can be upgraded to total 120 l and 25 kg carrying capacity with an additional 40 l top case. A steering damper which has been developed especially for this purpose keeps the bike 100% stable with maximum load.
The name "SuperTraveller" is connected to the successful "Skorpion Traveller" that has been produced until 2000. Due to its reliability and high practical use, most of its owners still use the bike daily.

From May 2005 onwards the ST will be available from the German dealers at a price of Euro 10,290. The complete bike with 2 side cases will cost only Euro 10,790. After the launch into the German market the ST will be exported as soon as possible."

1000 S

"Passion...built this motorcycle. Uncompromising, sporty, Pure and dynamic. "State of the art" and more. It is time, time for the MZ 1000S.

Being one of the world's oldest motorcycle manufacturers is an obligation. For more than eighty years, successful in racing, successful on the road. And, after a long journey, MZ is prepared for tomorrow. Modern, Computer-based and with the toughest test circuit in the world, the Ore Mountains. In vehicle testing, the automotive industry is MZ's benchmark. At all times, in every respect MZ is more than a production plant, more than a factory, it's our passion. The future begins today...

Sporty, Dynamic, Passionate. The driving dynamics are awe-inspiring. The comfort is superior. The high performance engine in connection with a tubular chassis and a powerful brake system are for us a kind of condition and a distinctive character of the MZ 1000S. The design interprets classic design values in a future-oriented way. Desire for dynamics, And more.

Sophisticated aerodynamics and ergonomic technology saves energy. The intelligent lightweight construction provides more usable power and the innovative instruments delight through precision and ease of use. With its aggressive face, sharp body lines and distinctive tail section, the MZ 1000S takes us into a whole new motorcycle dimension with a new standard in motorcycle technology. A strong inline twin cylinder - 4 stroke - 999cc, 86 KW (117hp), 95 Nm engine powers a 6-speed cassette gearbox. A dual exhaust system with 3-way catalytic converter expels clean spent exhaust gasses. The MZ 1000S engine concept is unique in its alignment. The most powerful series twin cylinder inline engine worldwide. The sound is phenomenal. Optimum power development, low noxious emissions, low fuel consumption and all this at the same time. That is not only modern, it is new. That makes us not only proud, but the MZ also damned fast. Weight was saved everywhere but not compromised. We chose the strongest chain. Quality-coated with sealing rings, constructed for a long life. That's coming on strong for the MZ 1000S. The dual tube bridge frame made of highly stable chromium molybdenum steel (CMDT), allows extraordinary road performance. In contrast to other bikes, the MZ 1000S is not only designed for uncompromising sportiness, but also features fully adjustable suspension, sporty or comfortable - even individual. The upper and lower fork bridge is a high pressure alloy casting. The removable rear subframe is exchangeable in the event of damage. The advantages compared to aluminum constructions are impressive. Higher rigidity at an equal weight, more stability and a longer life. The dual- cantilever- swing arm is made of highly stable aluminum alloy and therefore extremely rigid. This makes sense. The optimal kinetics of the rear wheel suspension combined with the high quality, fully adjustable rear shock for individual chassis tuning. That is nearly ingenious. These principles are not only to be permanently felt when riding the MZ 1000S, they also make the bike absolute magic to ride.

The holistic design of the MZ 1000S glistens with engineering competence. Individual in both worlds - engineering and design, sovereign in every situation and from every perspective, dynamic in realization of power and appearance. Therefore the driving performance of the MZ 1000S is not only convincing, but purely addictive. This philosophy continues in the tail light design: the perspective for the others - that is the MZ 1000S. The high-quality suspension is fully adjustable. Rebound, compression and hydraulic spring preload are way above class standard. An external compensating nitrogen reservoir optimizes heat dissipation for consistent damping. Fully adjustable inverted forks work in an equally convicting manner. Suspending the MZ 1000S precisely and providing optimum control in every situation. The wheels continue the design concept. Patented and new: Twin System wheel, exclusively produced for the MZ 1000S. This revolutionary technology enables a 10% reduction in rotating mass compared to cast rims. Precisely balanced 3.5 x 17 front and 5.5 x 17 rear. A unique look and a magnificent technological feat, a feast for the eyes.

The brake system permanently proves the concept of the MZ 1000S, uncompromising. 320 mm full floating dual disk brake and four-piston caliper provide the stopping power up front. With a single 243 mm disc brake in the rear. It goes without saying that both brake and clutch levers are adjustable. The true build quality is reflected in the brake system, the MZ 1000S has one of the best. We believe that you should always have everything under control. The multifunctional electronic instrument with its individual design is extremely light weight and precise. Analogue speedometer and odometer with 8 control lights. Multi-function display with mileage, trip odometer, coolant temperature display, digital clock and warning flasher. Acoustic turn signal reminder via way/time registration (optional). A unique instrument in design, function and ergonomics. You could call it obsession, our love and lust for detail.

The MZ 1000S proves once again their top priority is high technical aesthetics in functionality and material engineering. Quite simply, perfect. Need we say more?"

  1. It would appear the Oz DOT (Feds) are constipated.

Three months after the MZ 1000 arrived in NZ, it was homologated, sold and on the bitumen.

THREE years later, the Oz DOT are apparently arguing over the bloody chainguard?!

Why, oh why does Oz assume it is the font of all knowledge in things automotive?

"Yare, but we got the V8 supercars Mate!"

Yup and most of the bits are fully imported!

Get a brain and make some decisions Minister for Transport. Even more, try doing the NZ homologation thing with machinery the public servant knows nothing about, the motorcycle (I think Oz made one in 1924!).

NZ; they ask, is it an engineering safe automotive product in Germany?

NZ then ask, can it be registered in California?

    Yes to both?

Pass it and put it on the bloody road.

Tuning 40mm BING CV carburetors for BMW motorcycles by ear.

Steve Doyle has put together this great and simple guide to tuning your Bing carbs. No need for expensive tuning equipment. So over to Steve...... Any feed back on this How To please email me and I will pass it onto Steve.

There are 3 common methods to syncing the carbs. They will all work
1. Shorting the plugs. and
2. Using a manometer of some sort. Carbtune, Twinmax or home made
3. Using your ears. No comprehensive articles that I could find..

In the spirit of learning to service and tune at home and after lots of reading, I decided that for me the "by ear" technique might be the most useful, as it doesn't require any special tools and can be performed anywhere. There is no risk of electrical damage to the bike or the one doing the adjusting.

It was very difficult to find a comprehensive description of the procedure, so using the combined kn…

Ride impression of the Yamaha MT-03.....

Yamaha have realeased their new 660 based single. The MT-03. See I so want one....MT-03 The bike can be had in Europe but not here in Aussie land. I have asked Yamaha Australia if they will bring them in. They said "No plans at this stage to introduce the MT03 in to Australia." To rub salt into the wounds, axxess, the forum admin guy at got to ride one. NOOOO!!! So unfair. He translated his ride impression into English for those of us who will not get to ride this. Thank you mate for doing this for us. So lets see what he has to say.....

Saturday 16 February I could try the Yamaha MT-03 at Gebben Motors. I could try a brand new red 2008 model. After a short instruction and a warning because of the new tires we were ready to go! The first thing I noticed was the enormous wide steer and the upright riding position It gave me a feeling of absolute control and power! The seat was quit hard but not uncomfortable at all.

Unless it was still freezing t…

The petite MZ...

I asked a question on the MZOG • MZ Owners Group if I should call my bike an MZ or a MuZ. I got some very informative replies. One reply was emailed to me with a link to Wikipedia MZ entry.

What really caught my eye on this webpage was this very petite MZ 125 4 stroke water cooled single.

This is what was said about this bike… “MZ currently manufactures a line of 125cc 4-stroke motorcycles using a new and powerful engine designed in-house. The current MZ 125 produces 15 crank-horsepower (11 kW) and almost 10 lbf·ft (14 N·m) of torque. It is a liquid-cooled pressure-lubricated dual-overhead-cam design with 4 valves, high-voltage electronic ignition and an 11000 rpm ignition cut-off. This is officially the most powerful 125cc 4-stroke engine mass-manufactured and has also proved highly reliable. This engine is used in 4 models of motorcycle, all of which share a common frame. The frame is a tube-steel backbone with the engine as a stressed bottom member. Changes in the suspension, facia, …
